The Altima has been the subject of 20 non-injury complaints regarding a loss of stopping power. The culprit is supposed to be a brake fluid leak which, if left unaddressed by drivers when the warning light “is ignored,” decreases braking force. There are 440,000 Altimas included in the investigation. Nissan recalled 180,000 Sentras from the same model years for the same kind of leak. There are also 220,000 Jeep Wranglers under investigation for non-deployment of drivers’ airbags due to a failed electrical circuit. 29 non-injury complaints were received, and at least six of the Wranglers were found to have been right-hand-drive models. Report: NHTSA opens investigation into Jeep Liberty over rust-related suspension failures

Filed under: SUV , Safety , Crossover , Chrysler , Jeep Does the Jeep Liberty have an addiction to rust? Back in 2003, approximately 326,000 2002-2003 Liberty SUVs were recalled because their lower control arm ball joints could corrode excessively. Just three years later in 2006, the issue popped up again, which prompted a recall of 826,000 potentially rust-happy 2002-2006 Jeep models. Another three years passed when, in 2009, Chrysler sent out a recall notice to 42,469 2002-2003 Jeep Liberty owners located in cold-weather states. This time, the problem was related to the upper ball joints. Now it seems the Jeep Liberty is ready to jump the gun on its next every-three-years recall because the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration is investigating 370,000 vehicles… for the same issue. According to The Detroit News , NHTSA has opened up an investigation that involves 2002-2005 Jeep Liberty sport utility vehicles. It’s still just an investigation at this point, but given the round-eyed CUV’s track record, we’ll be keeping an eye out for more on this situation. Are 2007-2008 Jeep Wrangler SUVs spitting up gas?

Filed under: SUV , Recalls , Jeep , Off-Road Some Jeep Wrangler owners say they’ve been getting a nasty surprise from their 2007-2008 Wranglers. According to 600 complaints and 900 warranty claims, the Jeep off-roaders have been spitting gas at their owners during fill ups. According to owners, the Jeeps have a tendency to spit fuel back out of their filler lines if you aren’t paying close attention at the pump. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration opened an investigation into the claims in November 2010, but closed it in February after finding that the fuel leaks don’t pose any significant safety hazard. NHTSA also said that internet forums had played a role in the number of complaints they received, after forum members posted messages telling other owners to file complaints with NHTSA. Despite the number of complaints, NHTSA says many of them were unfounded and based solely on the urging of message boards. Jeep owners who experienced the problem aren’t convinced, however, saying that the problem is dangerous, and carries a repair valued at about $600, though Chrysler warranties cover most of the repair. Dodge Sprinter passenger vans face seatbelt recall

Filed under: Minivan/Van , Government/Legal , Recalls , Safety , Dodge , Mercedes-Benz 2007 Dodge Sprinter – Click above for high-res image gallery The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration announced on its website that Mercedes-Benz is recalling certain 2008-2011 model year Sprinter vans for a passenger compartment seatbelt issue. The recall, which is only valid for Sprinter vans with a second row bench seat, concerns seat belts that might not lock as required. Additionally, NHTSA adds that “the assembly loop may not perform to minimum force requirements.” Seatbelt recalls are always serious considering that they are typically the first, best line of defense in the event of an accident. In such cases, passengers with defective belts may not be properly fastened, which could lead to increased risk of injury or death. Since Mercedes-Benz took over responsibility for the sales and service of all Sprinter Vans (including Dodge -branded models) back in 2009, owners of affected vehicles will need to take their vans to the nearest Mercedes retail outlet for repairs. The dealers will inspect and replace any seat belt assemblies that don’t meet requirements. Hit the jump to read over the NHTSA press release.
