How Jeep jimmied the Pentastar V6 into the 2012 Wrangler
September 1, 2011 by Dodge Blogger · Leave a Comment
Filed under: SUV , Etc. , Technology , Jeep , Off-Road We can quit wondering why it took so long for Jeep to drop the 3.6-liter Pentastar V6 behind the round headlights of the 2012 Wrangler . According to Wards Auto, the engine had to undergo more than a few tweaks in order to be fit for duty in the trail-rated Wrangler. Engineers had to start by moving the alternator up and away from the middle of the engine to provide for greater water-fording capability. A new intake was also fitted to increase the kind of low-end torque buyers demand on the trail. Meanwhile, on-road civility was increased by changing the intake to draw from the engine’s left side instead of its right along with a unique acoustic cover. While those changes took a little research and development, they’ve obviously paid dividends in the Wrangler. Chrysler may apply a similar approach when the company moves to offer the 3.6-liter V6 in the Ram line soon. Jeep Wrangler’s body-color roof option taking off
August 26, 2011 by Dodge Blogger · Leave a Comment
Filed under: SUV , Jeep , Design/Style , Off-Road Jeep is expanding the availability of its body-color hard tops on the Wrangler for 2012. The company says that last year, 80 percent of Wrangler Sahara buyers selected the base hard top, while of those, 20 percent went all-in for the body-color option. Next year, Wrangler Rubicon buyers will also be able to get their off-road bruiser dressed to the nines. According to Ward’s Auto , the Wrangler recently experienced its best sales month in the history of the model last month, with 14,355 units rolling off of showroom floors. Roof supplier CSP recently retooled to handle the larger capacity, and as such, the 2012 roof features a few changes compared to those found on the 2011 Wrangler. Those include slightly larger openings at the rear hatch and side glass for more interior light and added finger grips to help with removal. Buyers will also be able to option up their Wranglers with color-matched fender flares for a complete monochrome look. Pretty snappy. 2012 Jeep Wrangler fuel economy figures improve
August 1, 2011 by Dodge Blogger · Leave a Comment
Filed under: SUV , Etc. , Chrysler , Jeep , Off-Road Chrysler has managed to squeeze a little extra fuel economy from the 2012 Jeep Wrangler . According to the Environmental Protection Agency , the model now gets up to 17 mpg city and 21 mpg highway, good for 18 mpg combined when saddled with a five-speed automatic or a six-speed manual transmission. That’s a thirteen-percent improvement over the 2011 model’s 15 mpg city and an 11 percent boost over the old bruiser’s 19 mpg highway. Not surprisingly, the increases come from the fact that the Wrangler now boasts the Pentastar 3.6-liter V6 engine. The better fuel economy doesn’t come at the cost of horsepower, either. In fact, the new V6 rocks 285 horsepower and 260 pound-feet of torque. The old 3.8-liter V6 was only good for a comparatively asthmatic 202 horsepower and 237 lb-ft of twist. The four-door Wrangler Unlimited shown above has also benefited from the Pentastar engine – its fuel economy has increased to 16 mpg city and 21 mpg highway when equipped with a six-speed manual transmission. 2012 Jeep Wrangler fuel economy figures improve originally appeared on Autoblog on Mon, 01 Aug 2011 11:31:00 EST. Growing international demand for Jeep Wrangler straining Toledo plant?
June 25, 2011 by Dodge Blogger · Leave a Comment
Filed under: SUV , Europe , Plants/Manufacturing , Jeep , Off-Road 2011 Jeep Wrangler Mojave – Click above for high-res image gallery Fiat is working to sell more and more Chrysler models abroad, and the effort may already be pushing some of the automaker’s manufacturing facilities to capacity. That appears to be true in the case of the Jeep Wrangler . According to The Toledo Blade , global demand for the off-road heathen is growing at a substantial pace, especially in Europe. As a result, total demand for the venerable SUV may easily overtake the capacity of its manufacturing complex in Toledo, Ohio. So far this year, Wrangler sales are up 13 percent in the U.S. alone, and with Jeep refranchising completed in Europe, Wrangler sales could increase even further abroad. The globalization of Jeep products may lead to new models arriving here in the States, too. According to Michael Manley, president of the Jeep brand, Europe’s unique emissions standards may make a viable case for once again introducing a diesel-powered Jeep on American soil. We like the sound of that. So what will Chrysler do to keep up the Wrangler pace? Manley was tight-lipped about the future of Wrangler production here in the U.S. and abroad, though if sales continue to outstrip the automaker’s ability to produce, something will have to be done in short order. The short clip after the break is apparently the abbreviated version of an upcoming short film featuring Kravitz taking the 2011 Jeep Wrangler Unlimited off the beaten track. Some of you may recall that this isn’t the first time that Mr. Kravitz’ music has been used to promote the off-road-ready sport-utes of the world . As a bonus, Chrysler threw in a sample of the music on Kravitz’s new record, Black and White America . From what we can tell, the upcoming short will feature Kravitz and the Wrangler getting down and dirty in an abandoned swamp. Click past the jump to see the action for yourself. PickupTrucks.com gets first drive of Jeep JK-8 Pickup conversion kit
April 22, 2011 by paramopgi · Leave a Comment
Filed under: Truck , Jeep , Off-Road Jeep fans have long clamored for a Wrangler with a pickup bed (ever since the CJ-8 Scrambler, that is), and Mopar appears to have come through with the introduction of the JK-8 Pickup conversion kit. The kit comes in one of two flavors; a show car spec that needs plenty of welding and a high degree of technical acumen and a bolt-on kit for the weekend warrior. The truck nuts at Pickuptrucks.com were pretty excited about taking a spin in the JK-8 Independence, so they headed to Moab for the annual Easter Jeep Safari . The modded-up Wrangler truck features the JK-8 kit, along with new wheels and tires, a 4.5-inch lift kit and a Dana 44 front axle. The truck site found the Independence to have some awkward proportions, and writer Mark Williams was a bit dismayed that the 50-inch pickup bed didn’t feature stronger coil springs to accommodate additional payload capacity. After some rock-crawling and other activities, Levine and company came away with the impression that the JK-8 Independence handles itself much the same as the Wrangler Unlimited. In other words, the bedded Wrangler acquitted itself off the beaten path just fine. Head over to Pickuptrucks.com to read the full account.
