Jeep Plant Produces 5-Millionth SUV

Earlier this week, Jeep’s Jefferson North Avenue Assembly Plant built its five millionth vehicle: a new Jeep Grand Cherokee. This plant also makes the 2014 Dodge Durango and previously built the large Jeep Commander SUV.

A 2014 Jeep Grand Cherokee Overland was the five millionth SUV to be manufactured at the plant since 1992, when the automaker celebrated building the very first of its kind: a white 1993 Grand Cherokee. In honor of Jeep’s support of the military, the keys to the iconic Grand Cherokee were handed over to USO president and CEO Sloan Gibson.

Although the Grand Cherokee has changed much over the course of 21 years, its overall capabilities have not. The 1993 Grand Cherokee won our coveted calipers as the 2013 Motor Trend Truck of the Year, and more recently, the Grand Cherokee EcoDiesel finished first in a comparison involving luxury diesel SUVs including the Mercedes-Benz ML350 Bluetec, Porsche Cayenne Diesel, and Volkswagen Touareg TDI. “This one is here to set a new standard for all Grand Cherokees,” we said of the 4×4 off-roader.

Even between then and now, the Grand Cherokee has continued to impress us: “Off-road, the Grand Cherokee is downright amazing given its on-road character. Fitted with Quadra-Drive II, the GC can heroically tackle the most extreme terrain, putting it in rare company with the likes of the Land Rover LR3,” we said in a review of the 2006 Jeep Grand Cherokee. “Overall performance from the fastest of the SUV set is only one piece of the pie when assessing the talents of the new Jeep Grand Cherokee. This is a great luxury-ute that also lives up to its rugged Jeep go-anywhere heritage,” we said of the 1999 Grand Cherokee Limited.
