Maserati to unveil Grand Cherokee-based SUV in Frankfurt

The automaker itself set the ambitious target of doubling its sales figures, but its corporate overlord Sergio Marchionne wants the brand to increase their sales tenfold . That’s ambitious and then some, and in order to get there, the Trident marque is going to need some new product. Fortunately, Maserati has just such plans in store. And we already know a bit about all of ‘em. The Quattroporte will be replaced by two new sedans – one smaller and one larger than the current model – while a new SUV is set to join the lineup for the first time. What we didn’t know is that the sport-ute is set, according to reports, for unveiling at the upcoming Frankfurt Motor Show next month. The vehicle, based on the latest Jeep Grand Cherokee , will likely debut in concept form at first. So it might be a while before we find out whether it will carry Maserati’s own V8 engine or something from the Chrysler parts bin, but we should have a good idea of what we’re looking at when the concept is unveiled next week. Filed under: Sedan , Performance , Chrysler , First Drives , Luxury Reborn Luxury Bruiser Aspires To Great Heights We couldn’t help but ask Chrysler officials point-blank about what cars their 2012 300 SRT8, the brand’s self-proclaimed “Ultimate combination of world-class luxury and performance,” will compete against. Their answer, delivered with zero hesitation and a perfect poker face? The Cadillac CTS-V . That utterance shut us up so quickly that we had to sit back in our chair to ponder the bold response. The new 2012 Chrysler 300 SRT8 , the highest-performing model ever in Chrysler’s lineup, boasts a powerful 6.4-liter Hemi V8 punch, massive Brembo brakes, lightweight forged wheels, countless hours of suspension tuning and a slew of cosmetic goodies. It is, without question, a very impressive sport sedan. But choosing a target like the CTS-V, Cadillac’s highly regarded flagship performance vehicle, may reveal a bit too much confidence. After all, the CTS-V isn’t just more powerful – its chassis is a bit lighter, it’s shorter in stature and it wears stickier shoes. Of course, it’s also much more expensive. We didn’t question Chrysler’s comment, or even raise an eyebrow to their claim. We were, after all, sitting at a racetrack with a 300 SRT8 idling in the hot pits just a dozen yards away. Instead, we walked out of the building, donned a helmet and climbed into the driver’s seat to find out for ourselves. Chrysler prices 2012 SRT fleet

According to Automotive News , buyers looking to jump into the 470-horsepower Charger with its scowling bodywork and 12-second quarter mile time can expect to be met with a $46,660 MSRP, including an $825 shipping and destination fee. The Charger’s two-door cousin, the 2012 Challenger SRT8, comes saddled with a moderately cheaper $44,077 price tag, though the gap narrows somewhat when you realize that the car gets hit with a $1,500 gas guzzler tax in automatic guise and a $1,000 tax when equipped with the six-speed manual gearbox. Sounds like all the more reason to row your own cogs to us. Step off of the Dodge lot and into the Chrysler showroom, and the 2012 300 SRT8 will set you back $47,995 thanks to some additional luxury bits. Which vehicle is the most expensive of the SRT flock? That title goes to the 2012 Jeep Grand Cherokee SRT8 with its $55,295 entry price. Everyone who purchases an SRT vehicle gets a one-day track experience to help them understand how to better control their vehicle, a move that sounds like a good investment to us.
